Album Intro:

The sleeve notes to Raina Rose's fourth studio album or should that be her first living room album? tell the same tale as many of the songs on the album. Having broken up with her boyfriend, a hard-working, free-spirited Oregonian folk singer is on the road, sleeping on friends' floors, writing songs, making music and seeking the perfect environment to make a record. After falling out with a number of producers, Rose finally found that environment in a friend's home in Austin, where When May Came was recorded live in the course of four days. The result is that freshness and energy that only live albums seem to possess, combined with a clear, slightly understated performance. Though she is yet to achieve widespread recognition, Rose bears very favourable comparison to Devon Sproule and similar jazz-influenced artists. When it comes to her songs, any comparison is probably unnecessary they stand on their own. The most remarkable song on this album is What Do You Bury?, the touching and beautiful story of a woman who suddenly finds herself free from a man she did not love but is still bound to. Rose continues her running theme of the hardships of life for the ordinary musician in Nashville, a lament to the reality of life for most artists turning up in the city of music to find themselves without even a place to sleep We're not staying at the Bristol, we're not playing the Ryman but not ready to give up on a dream. Raina Rose is touring the UK in September. --Back Roads Music, UK
